Justice Scales and books and wooden gavel

A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 240 months or 20 years in prison after being convicted of for distribution of a controlled substance that resulted in a death from taking fentanyl and for possession of the drug with intent to distribute.

Lawrence Coley, III, was found guilty by a federal trial on Aug. 15. An announcement from U.S. The conviction stemmed from a man who was found dead of a fatal dose of fentanyl in his car.

Coley was later connected to the death.

“This case illustrates the tragic consequences that drug trafficking can have on our communities,” said U.S. Attorney Kevin Davidson in an online announcement. “Coley’s complete disregard for the lives of others by continuing to sell his illegal drugs after causing a man’s death is disturbing. The harsh reality is that any pill not obtained from a pharmacy or doctor’s office could contain a lethal dose of fentanyl or other deadly drug."

There is no parole in the federal prison system, said Davidson.

"This sentence should serve as a warning to drug dealers - if you sell a pill and it contains fentanyl, you run the risk of spending decades in federal prison with no possibility of parole.”
