The Montgomery Police Department (MPD) has provided an update after the clearing of a homeless encampment behind a Walmart on Atlanta Highway that drew both support and criticism from the public.

The City of Montgomery announced on social media on May 9 that the camp was being cleared. The post drew several hundred comments, with many questioning if the residents were being helped with alternative sheltering.

The MPD announced in a post on social media on Thursday that their Crisis Intervention Officer, Cpl. Patrick Luckie, partnered with Quiet Storm Outreach Group, INC and the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless to help those that had stayed in the camp.

The post stated that the following on this list were provided:

Emergency and short-term shelter options

Financial assistance and rent/utilities support

Information on permanent housing programs

Legal services

Hotel stays for immediate shelter needs

Healthcare and wellness resources

Hygiene and sanitation items

Non-perishable food items

Supportive services to build skills for long-term stability

"We are grateful for the dedication and heart of everyone involved," said the post. "This kind of outreach is what strengthens our community and reminds us that together, we can make a difference."
