The City of Montgomery suspended its open container ordinance that let residents and visitors carry alcoholic drinks in the entertainment district, though such drinks are still allowed in designated areas.
Patrons can still carry drinks at licensed bars and restaurants with outdoor seating, said a recent announcement, but they may not be carried in the streets of the district.
The decision to suspend the ordinance was made at a meeting of the Montgomery City Council on Oct. 7.
“Montgomery is a safe city, but the events of last weekend have led us to take a closer look at our open container ordinance,” said Mayor Steven L. Reed. “We owe it to our residents and visitors to ensure that our entertainment districts remain secure and vibrant.”
Additionally, an announcement from the city stressed a "no loitering" reminder for the area as well for the sake of safety for citizens.
It was also stated that the change only affects the downtown district and does not apply to the districts in Cloverdale and Cottage Hill.
“Montgomery has always shown strength in the face of adversity,” Reed said. “We will care for the victims and their families, and we will remain strong. Our city has a history of resilience, and we will continue moving downtown, our entire city, and our region forward—together.”
The announcement added that a discussion on a citywide youth curfew will take place at an Oct. 17 meeting.
