A woman from Montgomery has been convicted of manslaughter in the 2024 shooting of her cousin, said an announcement from District Attorney Azzie Oliver.
Kawanda McDade was found guilty after the incident took place at a Circle K where her cousin, Natasha McDade, was working.
Surveillance video and witness testimony presented at trial indicated that Kawanda McDade entered the store to purchase a cup of ice before leaving. She returned some time later and a verbal argument began.
The argument carried on outside until Kawanda McDade reportedly shoved her cousin and then shot her with a gun that she pulled out of a purse.
Kawanda McDade argued that it was done in self defense but the jury returned a guilty verdict. She will be sentenced in October and faces 10 to 20 years in prison.
"Natasha McDade’s life was taken far too soon, leaving behind loved ones who will carry this loss with them forever," said Oliver.
"While no verdict can undo the pain of losing someone you love, our prosecutors and investigators worked diligently to ensure that justice was pursued for Natasha McDade and her family. I hope this verdict brings them some measure of closure.”
