The NAACP will unveil a marker honoring black Tuscaloosa coal miners who were trapped in an accident in 1901.
According to a press release by the NAACP miners were trapped for several days with some losing their lives during that time.
The unveiling will be held at its 73rd state convention on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9:00 a.m. at the Park at the Manderson Landing located on 69 Jack Warner Parkway.
Additionally, the theme of the 2025 convention will be "Beyond the Ballot" about civil rights, education, criminal justice, and economic development. Speakers will include Nandi Howard, Vice President of Content at Essence Magazine and Rev. Dr. Mark Thompson.
“We’re excited that this year’s convention will strengthen community connections, empower new voices, and chart a path toward a brighter and more equitable future for us all. Come out and be informed during this pivotal time when so much division is going on; this event will help us come together to be unified, said Benard Simelton, President of the NAACP Alabama State Conference.”
