Nancy Gardner Sewell, mother of Rep. Terri Sewell, recently passed away at the age of 81.Â
She was the first Black councilwoman of the Selma City Council and had also served as a librarian.Â
Terri Sewell shared the announcement on her Facebook page following her mother's passing on Thursday:Â
"Today, with deep sadness and a heavy heart, my brothers and I share the news of the passing of our beloved mother, Nancy Gardner Sewell.
Our family appreciates your continued thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Details of services to follow."
Gov. Kay Ivey shared her condolences on her Twitter page, highlighting Nancy Sewell's achievement as a member of the council.Â
"As the first African American councilwomen for Selma, she was a true trailblazer," she said. "Congresswoman Sewell, we are praying for you & your family and are here for you in your time of need."
