(The Center Square) – Four Louisiana congressional incumbents secured reelection Tuesday night, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and U.S. Reps. Clay Higgins and Troy Carter retaining their seats.
Johnson, a Republican representing Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, led with 58% of the vote as of 10:07 p.m., according to unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office. His closest challenger, Democrat Conrad Cable, had 24%.
Though Johnson's seat in Congress is safe, he will lose his role as speaker, as Democrats are projected to flip the U.S. House of Representatives. Scalise will also lose his position as majority leader.
"Republicans have much more work to do to give every American a shot at a better life," Johnson said following his victory. "We will never give up on that endeavor and that vision. A new Congress doesn't change that."
Scalise, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House, secured another term representing Louisiana's 1st Congressional District. He had 62% of the vote, compared with 32% for Democrat Lauren Jewett.
In the 3rd Congressional District, Higgins, a Republican, led with 56% of the vote. Democrat John Day had 20%, while Republican Kate Cotten had 7%.
Carter, a Democrat representing the heavily Democratic 2nd Congressional District, led with 75% of the vote. Republican Peter Williams trailed with 23%.
"People should have access to health care. People should have access to clean water and clean air. They should have economic opportunities and education systems that work for them. We should have systems where people are treated equally at every front," Carter said at his victory party. "And when I go back to Washington next week, that is what we will be restoring."
The results were still incomplete as of 10:09 p.m., with precincts across all four districts remaining unreported. The Associated Press called the races.
