Rescued dog gives birth to record-breaking litter of puppies

A rescued dog has given birth to the largest litter of puppies ever seen at the RSPCA rescue centre where she is being cared for.

Five-year-old Cane Corso Kila arrived at the animal charity's Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch back in July.

She had been saved from a property in Doncaster, South Yorks., due to welfare concerns.

Volunteers had no idea she was pregnant until she went to get neutered at the vets and six days later she gave birth to a huge litter of 14 puppies on August 3.

The center is now currently looking after 21 puppies after another pooch in their care, Susie, gave birth to 10 pups on July 28.

Chloe Gee, who works at the branch, said: “By the time we found out Kila was pregnant, we’d already taken Susie in, knowing that she was expecting.

“When we discovered we would be having two litters we were rather surprised; especially as they were due just a few days apart."

Kila's brood is the highest number the center has ever seen, but sadly three of them did not survive.

Cedric, Clark, Cornelius, Guinness, Jones, Lorenzo, Lucille, Marion, Roderick, Sarah and Winnie will now be ready for their new homes from September 28.

Any families who are interested in giving them a forever home are being urged to contact the rescue centre.

Chloe added: "Both Kila and Susie are so sweet.

"They’re such good moms and we’re supporting them as best we can, including the two who are being hand-reared.

“It’s been a really busy time but we’re so proud to have beautiful, wiggly puppies who are becoming cheekier and funnier by the day.

“However, looking after all of the pups has really taken its toll on the whole team and on our funds, so we’d be really grateful to anyone who can help as we nurture these gorgeous families.”

The centre is also asking for donations - so they can buy toys and other much-needed items for all of their residents - as well as donations of puppy food.

Chloe said: “We’ve got so many wonderful dogs in our care at the moment, all just looking for one thing: a loving, safe home to call their own.
