Spring cruises are full steam ahead, charting a course to often overlooked destinations as major cruise lines revise their itineraries. Ships now offer travelers new ports of call along with unexpected experiences beyond traditional routes. From Caribbean getaways to European coastal journeys, these updated routes reflect a growing demand for unique shore excursions and off-the-beaten-path adventures that go beyond the typical cruise calendar.

This spring, cruise lines are extending port stays and introducing themed voyages to target specific interests including culinary arts, wellness and cultural exploration. Travelers seek richer, more meaningful experiences at each stop, and cruise companies are answering with itineraries designed for deeper discovery. Here’s a look at the destinations they’re sailing to right now.

Alaska

Oceania Cruises’ Riviera is setting a fresh course through Alaska, stopping in under-the-radar ports like Kodiak and Homer, where wildlife outnumbers people and the scenery is endlessly dramatic. As part of its inaugural Alaska season, Riviera’s 12-day Wilds of Alaska itinerary departs from Vancouver on May 29 and ends in Whittier on June 10, 2025.

Along the way, guests can explore glacier-carved fjords, stroll through frontier towns and witness some of the region’s most iconic wildlife. The ship’s smaller size allows it to access more intimate ports. And, onboard amenities like specialized menus and enrichment programs keep the experience both luxurious and educational.

Spain and Morocco

Leaning into cultural immersion, Seabourn is designing its voyages to offer more than just a glimpse of a place. This spring, the Seabourn Ovation sails on a 10-day Spain and Morocco itinerary that will journey guests from Iberian cities to North African ports. It’s carefully crafted for travelers who want a little more discovery with their luxury.

Travelers can tour the Moorish fortresses of Malaga, sip wine in the vineyards of Rivesaltes and explore the medieval charm of Salses Castle. Other highlights include shopping in Gibraltar and visiting Casablanca’s old medina for a taste of Morocco’s vibrant traditions. Onboard, you can enjoy refined dining and a relaxed, all-suite experience with regional flair.

Norwegian fjords

Havila Voyages offers a different kind of spring sailing: quiet, low-emission cruises along Norway’s breathtaking coastline. These itineraries focus on sustainability and authenticity, taking passengers through United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO-listed fjords and small, coastal communities aboard Havila’s energy-efficient ships.

With electric propulsion and locally sourced dishes featured on the menus, the journey is as environmentally thoughtful as it is scenic. Travelers can hike above dramatic cliffs, sample Arctic seafood or spot the Northern Lights from the deck in complete silence.

The Mediterranean

Small-ship lines like SeaDream Yacht Club and Ponant spotlight lesser-known Mediterranean locations this season. These boutique routes are ideal for travelers who want a slower pace and more time ashore.

Smaller vessels make it possible to dock closer to the heart of town, so you can start exploring the moment you step off the ship. That means no long transfers, no sprawling terminals: just a quick walk into vibrant city centers, sleepy fishing villages or cliffside cafes. It’s a big part of why these cruises feel more personal and flexible, allowing cruisers to immediately soak up the local atmosphere and make the most of their time on land.

South Pacific

Paul Gauguin Cruises leads spring 2025 voyages through the South Pacific, with stops in Fakarava in the Tuamotu Archipelago, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its exceptional diving and snorkeling. The cruise also visits Raiatea in the Society Islands, often regarded as the spiritual heart of French Polynesia.

These trips focus on connecting with Polynesian culture through guided reef snorkeling, onboard cooking classes and traditional performances. Ships often anchor in lagoons, allowing guests to disembark straight into paradise.

The Great Lakes

Viking’s expedition cruises bring travelers to the U.S. and Canada’s Great Lakes this spring, offering an inland alternative to ocean voyages. These routes stop in ports like Mackinac Island, Milwaukee and Thunder Bay, combining cultural immersion with natural beauty.

Guests can explore maritime museums and scenic reserves; no salt water required. It’s a slower, more reflective way to cruise, perfect for those looking to stay closer to home without giving up on adventure.

Chart a new course

Spring 2025 is shaping up to be a season of thoughtful exploration, not just travel. With cruise lines leaning into cultural immersion and under-the-radar destinations, there’s a sense that cruising is evolving into something more personal and purposeful. Ship design, shore excursions and even onboard menus increasingly reflect this shift, where the experience now feels more mindful, connected and ultimately rewarding.
