New York Man sentenced for role in Montgomery debit card fraud

A man from Brooklyn, NY has been sentenced for his role in a debit card fraud scheme in Montgomery. 

According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas Govan Eric Kendrie Shuler, 34, was sentenced to more than seven years in a federal prison, with three years of supervised released to be served afterwards. 

In the fall of 2024, Shuler and co-defendant Kyara Ivelisse Rosario-Berenguer, 30, from Reading, PA, reportedly began illegally obtaining debit cards and associated account information from members of a credit union before using them to make around 201 unauthorized withdrawals from ATMs in and around Montgomery.

The scheme yielded $214,757 in stolen money.

On Sept. 8 in 2024 the pair were sighted by Prattville Police Department officers who attempted to stop them. They fled in a vehicle and a pursuit began. 

"During the pursuit, Shuler maneuvered around numerous vehicles at high speeds, recklessly swapping lanes, driving on the wrong side of the road, running red lights, and reaching speeds of at least 140 mph through traffic on Interstates 65 and 85," said the statement. 

Shuler eventually crashed into a guardrail near the Perry Hill Road exit on I-85 in Montgomery. He reportedly continued to resist arrest as he was being taken into custody. 

During their trials the two confessed to stealing the funds and making 138 ATM withdrawals. They were both ordered to pay the money back jointly and severally.
