During a seven-hour testimony on his investigation into alleged Russian interference in President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) of Selma was one of others in a committee to question Robert Mueller, who led the investigation.
Mueller’s inquiry centers around allegations that nationals from Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor. In past months a report was released from Mueller that explained his findings in the allegations.
A hearing was recently called in which Mueller answered questions from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of which Sewell is a senior member.
In an announcement on her website, Sewell asked him about a meeting at Trump Tower in 2016 attended by Jared Kushner (Son-in-law to Trump), Paul Manafort and Donald Trump Jr. with “at least five Russian nationals.”
The meeting allegedly involved an offer by the Russians to give “damaging” information on Hilary Clinton, but that later those in the meeting were reportedly disappointed that the information was not as damaging as hoped.
“The meeting has become a central component of the Committee’s counterintelligence investigation, as it is against the law for a political campaign to accept anything of value from a foreign government,” Sewell’s announcement states.
At the hearing Sewell asked Mueller if anyone from the Trump campaign reported to the FBI about the meeting, to which he replied, “I don’t believe so.”
“Sir, is it not the responsibility of political campaigns to inform the FBI if they receive information from a foreign government?” Sewell asked.
“I would think that’s something they would and should do,” was Mueller’s next response.
A transcript of Sewell’s questioning can be seen in the online announcement.
