Marengo County Historical Society hosted its eighth annual Rooster Day on Saturday with about 5,000 attendees enjoying music, vendors, food and activities at town square in downtown Demopolis.

Rooster Day serves as a celebration of the 1919 rooster auction the community held to raise money for construction of a bridge over the Tombigbee River to connect Marengo and Sumter counties.

Funds raised from the auction jumpstarted financing for the bridge, so they named it Rooster Bridge, which stays with each iteration of the overpass more than 100 years later.

The event serves as an economic boost for Demopolis, bringing in visitors to spend money in town as they come for the festival.

Rooster Day featured a run, music from local musicians, dance routines, vendors with handmade goods only, a petting zoo, face painting and more.
