A death investigation has been launched after an evidence technician with the Selma Police Department was found murdered early Wednesday morning.
According to a press release from the Selma Police Department Chief Kenta Fulford, authorities responded to a call about a gunshot victim at the 3400 block of Water Avenue on Nov. 21.
Jamyron Hope from the police department was identified as the victim.
Fulford said that the case has been turned over to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), which sent out a notice that their investigation resulted in a road closure at the intersection of U.S. 80 and Water Street. The intersection will be blocked "for an extended period of time. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route,” according to the SBI statement.
Hope is the second SPD officer to die of a gunshot wound in the last two years. Officer Marquis Moorer, 25, was killed in an ambush on July 27, 2021.
"Please keep Evidence Tech [Hope's] family and the Selma Police Department in your thoughts and prayers," Fulford said in the press release.
Selma Mayor James Perkins in a statement expressed his personal condolences to family, colleagues and friends of Mr. Hope.
