City officials will hear presentations from three bidders for the long-awaited citywide surveillance camera system Wednesday.
The city will hear from Action Solutions at 11 a.m., SELCOM at 1 p.m. and Alabama Power Co. at 2 p.m. in the City Council chambers.
The city has looked at installing surveillance cameras for more than two years, but the executive branch and the council haven’t been able to agree on a vendor. The council has heard proposals from Alabama Power Co. and from local firm SELCOM, which uses cameras manufactured by Tennessee company SkyCop.Â
Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. and his staff, including the police chief and former IT director, preferred the APC system. A majority of the council preferred the SELCOM system.
Gun violence in Selma has created a greater sense of urgency to install a camera system, which many feel will reduce crime or at least make crimes easier to solve. Attorney and activist Faya Rose Toure has berated the City Council at almost every meeting for months because cameras have not been installed.
