The Voice crowned Selma’s Asher HaVon as its Season 25 winner Tuesday night.
In Selma High’s auditorium, dozens celebrated together in a rousing watch party that included Asher’s mother, Joanne Smith, wearing a “Let Go & Let God” button.
HaVon, 31, beat out four others to take the top spot in the national singing competition that finished Tuesday with the results of votes taken after he belted out Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” on Monday night on a live performance in Los Angeles.
Selma High’s auditorium welcomed supporters to watch HaVon perform while together, many lifting their arms in the air as he hit the high notes his mother says he learned to do while singing gospel at Selma churches and events.
Smith told the Selma Sun her son started holding a mic like a pro at 3 or 4 years old. He was encouraged to sing by his faith and school community.
Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. released a statement Tuesday night saying, "The City of Selma is elated to announce its own, Asher Havon, as the winner of NBC Season 25 'The Voice' competition."
Mayor Perkins states, “We are extremely proud of Asher, and we look forward to receiving you back in Selma to celebrate your success. Job well done. Selma is proud.”
