Selma Sun accepts record 11 awards at Alabama Press Association

Selma Sun leaders Brad Fisher, associate publisher, Cindy Fisher, publisher and owner, and Debrah Fisher, business manager, hold the seven first place awards won at the 2021 APA Media Awards ceremony held last weekend.

Publisher and owner Cindy Fisher received the awards on Saturday night along with her parents and leadership team Brad Fisher, associate publisher, and Debrah Fisher, business manager. 

The awards that included seven first place wins were given to the Selma Sun for stories, videos and social media accomplishments achieved by staff. It is the most awards won by the Selma Sun since its founding in 2015 and sale to Kingfisher Media in 2018. 

"Kingfisher Media was established to revolutionize community newspapers and we are doing that every day in Selma and Dallas County with positive coverage that is presented in innovative and interactive ways," said Cindy Fisher, who is also CEO of the Selma Sun’s parent company, Kingfisher Media, which produces videos and provides public relations and marketing services to small businesses and nonprofits throughout Alabama.

The Selma Sun received first-place awards for best economic coverage, a feature story about Selma twins Ryan and Bryan Hurt written by Brad Fisher and for an editorial column written by Cindy Fisher. The paper received third-place awards for its education coverage and for its outdoor special section compiled by Cindy Fisher and Todd Prater. 

In video categories, the Selma Sun took first place for best use of video, and individual videos on the St. James Hotel and Tropical Storm Sally took first and second place in the category of short videos. The Sun received a first-place award for a longer video on Bowman Farms. All videos were produced by Cindy Fisher and Chico Cleveland.

The Selma Sun received a third-place award for use of social media for its Facebook page. 

This year, 54 publications submitted 1,852 entries in the annual APA contest, which was judged by the South Carolina Press Association membership. Newspapers competed in divisions based on circulation size.
