The Selma Sun has won a record 11 awards in the Alabama Press Association Media Awards for work produced in 2020.

The first round of awards announced Friday by the APA were given to the Selma Sun for stories, videos and social media accomplishments achieved by staff. It is the most awards won by the Selma Sun since its founding in 2015 and sale to Kingfisher Media in 2018. Another round of awards will be given out at the annual APA convention in late June.

"Kingfisher Media was established to revolutionize community newspapers and we are doing that every day in Selma and Dallas County with positive coverage that is presented in innovative and interactive ways," said Kingfisher Media CEO Cindy Fisher, who is also publisher of the Selma Sun.

In the awards announced Friday, the Selma Sun received six first place wins, including for online breaking news for its coverage of Hurricane Zeta on Oct. 29.

“I’m especially proud of the award for online coverage because our entire staff was involved with keeping our community informed during a stressful time,” Fisher said.

The Selma Sun received first-place awards for best economic coverage, a feature story about Selma twins Ryan and Bryan Hurt written by Brad Fisher and for an editorial column written by Cindy Fisher. The paper received third-place awards for its education coverage and for its outdoor special section compiled by Cindy Fisher and Todd Prater.

In video categories, the Selma Sun took first place for use of video, and individual videos on the St. James Hotel and Tropical Storm Sally took first and second place in the category of short videos. The Sun received a first-place award for a longer video on Bowman Farms. All videos were produced by Cindy Fisher and Chico Cleveland.

The Selma Sun received a third-place award for use of social media for its Facebook page. Follow the Selma Sun here.

This year, 54 publications submitted 1,852 entries in the annual APA contest, which was judged by the South Carolina Press Association membership. Newspapers competed in divisions based on circulation size. First place awards in many other categories and divisions will be presented at the 2021 APA Summer Convention banquet awards program in June.
