The Selma City Council has taken the first steps to sell the Selma Interpretive Center to the National Park Service, who plans to expand and improve the center within four years.

In a resolution reviewed by the council at its work session on Thursday, the city will sell the Interpretive Center at 2 Broad St. and some surrounding property to the National Park Foundation. The Foundation, the official fundraising organization of the National Park Service, will in turn convey the property to the National Park Service, part of the Department of the Interior.

Dr. Joy Kinard, superintendent of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail and several other National Park Service assets in central Alabama, said funds for the project are in the federal budget proposed by President Joe Biden. The goal is to complete the project before the end of the president’s current term in 2024.
