The 20th Annual Safe Haven Center "Stop the Violence Caravan and Rally" was held Monday on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, starting at Brown Chapel and ending with speeches and songs at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
The event that is usually a march was converted to a caravan due to the COVID pandemic. It honored Dr. King's legacy by promoting the "Beloved Community" and highlighting the virtue of peace, the group said in a news release.
Safe Haven Center CEO Rev. Michael Bowen stated, "Our current times are confirmation that Dr. King's message is just as important now as it was when he marched alongside foot soldiers right here in Selma. This is why we decided to work with groups from around the state to make sure our annual Stop the Violence March and Rally took place; despite the challenges we're facing due to COVID."
