The St. James Hotel will be part of a worldwide ghost hunting event this weekend.
Alabama is home to several well-known haunted places, including Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, the Drish House in Tuscaloosa, Gaineswood in Demopolis and Old Cahawba Archaeological Park in Dallas County. But one of the most haunted places in Alabama gets very little attention – the St. James Hotel.
Ghost hunter Sara Williams said she hopes to change that.
According to legend, the outlaw team of brothers Frank and Jesse James often stayed at the St. James in the 1880s. It has been said Jesse James haunts the rooms he stayed in. A ghostly apparition of a woman has allegedly been seen roaming the halls of the St. James. Legend has it this is Jesse James’ girlfriend Lucinda. She was fond of the smell of lavender, which guests have reported smelling in parts of the hotel. There have also been reports of people dressed in 1800s clothing gathered in the courtyard.
