Rob Stewart did something no one else has been able to do in 40 years: he beat a Sanders for the State Senate. Sanders and Stewart, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, faced each other in the June 21 runoff after edging out Selma businessman Thayer Spencer and former Selma Mayor and House Rep. Darrio Melton in the primary. Stewart defeated Sanders in the runoff with 55.6% of the vote.
