June 9 Fayette County Republican Party Meeting
By: DEAN MADDOX
The Fayette County Republican Party held its last monthly meeting prior to this year’s Republican Party runoff election on June 9 at the Fayette Civic Center.
Guest speakers for the meeting were Bryan Brinyark, Alabama House of Representatives District 16; and Matt Woods, Alabama Senator District 5.
Brinyark and Woods spoke to those in attendance concerning key legislation that was passed by the Alabama Legislature this year. They spoke about the “Legacy Bill,” which creates a dedicated fund to reinvest some of the revenue dollars received from coal produced on federal land to help benefit Fayette, Walker, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties.
They also spoke about helping enact a law that would freeze the homestead property taxes of residents who have lived on their properties the past five years. The property tax exclusion would not include additions and improvements made on the properties, but would prevent taxes from increasing on the base value.
Other bills enacted during the session strengthened laws that will protect citizens from violent criminals and increased the penalties for bomb threats and terrorist threats.
In addition to Brinyark and Woods speaking at the meeting, candidates for the local Republican runoff elections for the offices of Fayette County Superintendent of Education and Fayette County Revenue Commissioner were given an opportunity to speak to those in attendance.
The primary runoff elections will be held on Tuesday, June 16, and everyone was encouraged to vote in the upcoming Republican Primary.
