Synagogues in Montgomery and Selma were among others in Alabama to receive a bomb threat on Saturday.
Rep. Phillip Ensler (AL-74) confirmed on his X (formerly Twitter) account that his synagogue in Montgomery had come under threat and shared a video of a Shabbat service being interrupted to evacuate the congregation.
"This morning during Shabbat religious services — the Jewish day of rest — we had to evacuate my synagogue in Montgomery, AL due to a bomb threat," he said. "This is exhausting. I pray for the day that we can worship and live in peace."
According to AL.com the historic Temple Mishkan Israel in Selma was among those threatened, along with Temple Emanu-El in Dothan, Congregation Beth Shalom in Auburn and the Temple Beth Or, Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem and the Jewish Federation of Central Alabama in Montgomery.
The threat reportedly came via email.
AL.com also reports that authorities in Baldwin County believe that the incident may be part of a nationwide hoax.
The threat drew condemnation from Sen. Katie Britt, who commented on her social media: "These threats against Jewish congregations here in Alabama are absolutely reprehensible. This type of antisemitic behavior has no place in our state or nation."
