A tornado watch is in effect for much of the Black Belt region until 5 p.m. today.Â
The National Weather Service has Barbour, Bullock, Dallas, Hale, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike and Sumter counties under the watch.Â
Selma, Demopolis, Montgomery and Greenville are all under a moderate risk for severe storms.Â
AlabamaWx Weather Blog says that heavy storms today could produce large hail, damaging winds and possibly tornados during the afternoon hours.Â
The public is advised to stay up to date with weather reports and take precautions as needed. A Facebook page for the National Weather Service Birmingham can be found here.Â
