Tuition rates for Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) students will not be raised for the 2021-2022 school year.
The decision was made by officials at the Alabama Community College System after determining that the COVID-19 pandemic has already stressed students in paying for education.
ACCS Chancellor Terry Baker commented in a message released to media that he hopes that the tuition freeze will allow easier access to colleges and that normal campus operations should resume in fall.
“This year has been difficult for many Alabamians and access to education and skills training shouldn’t be something that makes it harder," he said. "By freezing tuition and ensuring online, in-person, and hybrid classes are available at Alabama’s 24 community colleges, we’re doing our part to expand opportunities for coursework and training to help Alabamians build a better future."
“From the beginning of the pandemic, our number one priority has been the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff, and it will continue to be our primary focus as we work to safely reopen our campuses across the state.”
Tuition at WCCS and others in the system is $133 per credit hour, which the message says is half of what four-year universities charge.
Additionally the ACCS introduced "buy one, get one free" tuition discounts as part of the Community Scholarship program for classes in spring and deployed 10,500 laptops to students.
