Two Morgan Academy Senators are taking their talents to the college level in their respective sports.
Trey Jones signed a letter of intent to play football as a linebacker for Huntingdon College, and Andrew Thomas signed a letter of intent to play baseball as a pitcher for Lawson State Community College on Friday, Feb. 11 at the Morgan Academy New Gym.
Last year, Thomas was 9-3 for the Senators pitching 79 innings, striking out 105 batters with a 1.68 ERA. He also had a .404 batting average.
Paul Thomas said of his son’s signing to play as a pitcher for Lawson State, “As a parent of a son that you’ve seen grow up playing this sport so many years, it has to be one of your proudest moments.” He said getting an opportunity to move on to the next level and play is something only a small percentage of kids get the opportunity to do.
Andrew Thomas said, “It’s awesome, getting an opportunity to go to Lawson State… I’m excited, ready for it and ready to get there in the fall.”
Morgan Academy head baseball coach Stephen Clements said Lawson State is getting a good athlete in Thomas.
“On an average day he is going to give up two runs, on a great day he is going to give up none. So, every time you put him on the mound, you’ve got a chance to win. He’s been vital to our team ever since he’s been here,” Clements said.
Lebo Jones, Trey’s father, said his son always dreamed of playing college football as a child, and “we’re just thrilled to death that he has this opportunity. He had a couple of more offers from way out of town, and we’re just glad he is staying close to home.”
Trey Jones said, “It’s very exciting to sign, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for me at Huntingdon. I’ve always wanted to play linebacker.”
Danny Raines, Morgan Academy head football coach and athletic director, said that in two years at Morgan, Jones had 231 tackles, 153 solo and 78 assists, 14.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries, six caused fumbles and a blocked kick.
“Andrew Thomas and Trey Jones are great kids. They’ve done a great job here at Morgan Academy,” Raines said. He said he is excited for them to continue their athletic careers and get an education at the same time.
Dr. Bryan Oliver, headmaster at Morgan Academy said, “We’re certainly proud of them. You know one of the fun things about being an educator and being at a school like Morgan is being able to celebrate like this with our kids. You know they put in a lot of hard work not only in the classroom, but outside the classroom with their activities in athletics. We are super proud of Andrew and Trey both for being able to move to the next level.”
