Vaughan Regional Medical Center hosted a welcome reception for its new orthopedic surgeon Tuesday at the VRMC Surgery Center.
Dr. Jason D. Cobb joins Vaughan in orthopedic surgery, replacing Dr. Richard Rex Harris who practiced at Vaughan Regional Medical Center since 2012 and passed away last month.
The reception brought Vaughan leaders including CEO David McCormack and board members, Vaughan's Chief Nursing Officer Karen McCaa, Director of Physician Services Ashley Atchison, doctors who practice at Vaughan and area doctors also came to visit with Cobb, including Dr. Sunmi Oyesiku of Rural Health.
Cobb was already planning to take over orthopedic surgery for Harris to retire before he suddenly passed away in mid January. The Nashville native comes to Vaughan from practicing in Demopolis and says he will be moving to Selma from his Forkland home.
Bringing Cobb to Vaughan will expand services offered at the Surgical Center behind Vaughan Medical Tower. Under Cobb, they will offer total knee and hip replacement, treat fractures, sports injuries, arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery and treat carpal tunnel.Â
Cobb told the Black Belt News Network he hopes to bring the latest technology to Selma and offer services in the Black Belt that often require residents to drive long distances to receive.
Cobb is a UAB graduate and did his residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, St. Louis University and did a fellowship at Georgia Orthopedic Trauma Institute. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
