Tipton voting rights winners

The winners of the Bridge Crossing Jubilee Book Review Quiz Bowl held of Feb. 29 at Tipton Durant Middle School have been announced. 

The subject book was “A Time to Know’ Our Stories, Our Victories, Our Possibilities," with Tipton Durant Middle, Keith Middle, R. B. Hudson, and Martin Middle schools participating. 

Wanda Tyler coordinated the event. The panel of judges were: 

  • Jeannie Evans, Retired Educator from Dallas County School System
  • Althelstein M. Johnson, Retired Educator Selma City School System
  • Cindy Owens, Retired Educator taught 14 years in Detroit, MI
  • Marcy Pettus, Rural Health Liaison for UAB Sanitation Health Study
  • Rita Pullom, Juvenile Probation Officer in Dallas County
  • Stephen Smith, Pastor at Bethel Spring Bapt. Church, Chairperson of Pine Glenn Community Association at Craig Field

The bowl consisted of three rounds where questions about the book were answered. Contestants were judged on voice, presentation and content. 

The winners were: 

  • First place winners for Tipton Durant Middle: LaRonnicka Allen, Kassidy Davis, Australia McQueen, Jazz’e Andrews and Aryle Washington was sponsor.
  • R. B. Hudson: Morgan Griffen, Ciara Perkins, Khi Byrd, MaKayla Thomas and Quinnya Dower, Sponsor
  • Keith Middle: Lillian Kimbrough, Journey Williams, Kendall Vaughn, Jacqueria Terrel and Kiesela Foster, Sponsor
  • Martin Middle: Peyton Johnson, Colby Herrob, Jamalya Barnett-Peterson, Kameron Jackson and Alisha Cleveland, Sponsor

"The Voting History Bowl is important, it educates our scholars on the history of the Voting Rights Movement and why it is important to register and vote when they are 18 years of age as well as demonstrates the scholar's understanding of this history and how lessons learned can be applied in their school and community," said Yomi Goodall, Jubilee Youth Events Coordinator.
