Citizen advisory boards, surveillance cameras and better funding of the police department were efforts made in 2021 to combat Selma’s nagging crime problem.
The city created a civilian review board for public safety in 2021. Discussion began after a skirmish between police and residents went viral on social media in February to improve communication between Wards and find ways to reduce the crime rate.
The council in late summer approved the creation of a civilian review board that will provide oversight regarding the excessive use of force and other complaints, and internal police investigations conducted by the police. The board consists of one member appointed by the mayor, one by each city councilperson and one by the police chief.
