Obituary: Edgar W. Greene Jr.

Born in Selma, Alabama, Edgar W. Greene, Jr. grew up in Minter, Alabama with his two brothers, Lee, and George. Elisabeth Patton Youngblood and Edgar Wilson Greene raised the boys enjoying the countryside of Dallas County. Ed graduated from The University of Alabama in 1962, with a B.A. in History and Political Science. He received his Juris Doctorate degree at UA School of Law in 1965, and began his law career in Huntsville, AL as an Assistant District Attorney. He continued practicing law, serving for decades in the District Attorney’s Office for the 4th Judicial Circuit. He also served his community of Selma working with Hobbs & Hain Law Firm, and later as City Prosecutor before retiring after a 50-year career.  

Outside his career, he relaxed at his boyhood home, working the land, and raising cattle. Always busy, Ed’s other roles included: President of the Selma Lions Club, the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society, and the Central Alabama Fair. In addition, he served as VP and Member of the Executive Committee of the University of Alabama, Dallas County Alumni Chapter and on the Vestry for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma. If he was not preparing for court, Ed could also be found practicing lines for his many parts on stage with the Little Theatre in Selma. 

Ed is survived by his wife Sandra Pollard Greene, his two daughters and their families: Meg and Jimmy Sims of Mt. Brook, AL (Annabelle, Mary Patton, and Jeb), Kari and Matt Alexander of Jefferson, TX (Mary Kathryn), (preceded in death Nathan), his two brothers Lee Greene of Decatur, AL and George Greene of Tuscaloosa, AL, their families, his two brothers-in-law Phil Pollard of Glen Ellyn and Bob Pollard of Dunedin, FL, and their families.

The service will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 with visitation at 12:30 p.m. and service at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma. After the Selma service, there will be a small graveside service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Carlowville.
