Freedom Fest is set for June 17 to celebrate Juneteenth in Selma and will have a special focus on ending violence.
The event will be held at 1501 JL Chestnut Boulevard from 3 to 6 p.m. with the topic "Freedom from Murder, Drugs and Violence."Â
Juneteenth is set as a national holiday to celebrate the end of slavery, but organizers wanted to give this Freedom Fest a focus on increased crime in Selma.
"In recent weeks, there have been nine murders and two teen deaths related to drugs in Selma. It's not enough to celebrate past violence. We must take steps to end the violence that ravages our town today," organizers said in a statement.
Organizers include Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee, North Star Beloved Community, ANS, Blackbelt Human Resource Development Center and the Ancient African Museum.
