The 2020 varsity boys and girls basketball season for Morgan Academy got underway on Tuesday, Nov. 17 with home game losses against Macon East Academy. But head varsity basketball coach Luke Hutcheson is excited about his team’s chances this year, and head varsity girls basketball coach Danny Raines says he has a great group of girls.
The varsity boys lost to Macon East 41-38 and the Lady Senators lost 58-30.
Against Macon East, top scorers for the varsity boys Senators were George Turner, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Rhyne Williams, who had 8 points and Wilks Chittom, who had 8 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Senators, who trailed 28-13 at the half, were led by Sarah Thomas, who scored 11 points while Bailey Brown scored 10 points, had three assists and three steals.
Hutcheson said, “’I’ m very excited about this group of guys this year. This will be the fourth year these guys have played under, me and I really expect the program to get over the hump this year. Hutcheson said, “Having key players in George Turner, Chris Gardner and Rhyne Williams returning is great for us. We know it’s a long season, and we are striving to get better every day to be where we want to be physically and mentally when we get into February.”
Raines, who is also head football coach and athletic director, said, “We have a great group of girls here. We are going to do the best we can and try to improve each day.” He is assisted by Morgan Academy volleyball coach Taylor Thomas.
The Morgan Academy varsity boys roster includes: Seniors, Turner, 10; Evan Eskridge, 3; Clayton Oshields, 00; Gardner, 5; and Brody Roberts, 32; juniors, Wade Mason, 11; Cink Minter, 14; Andrew Thomas, 2; Andrew Morris, 24; Davis Vardaman, 13; and Wilks Chittom, 22; sophomores, Cole Wilson, 55; Williams, 3; Teddy Henry, 20; Alan Michael Creech, 12; John Beekman Youngblood, 21; and T.B. Clements, 33.
The Morgan Academy varsity girls roster includes juniors, Sarah Thomas, 3; Leanna Johnson, 33; and Scout Moore, 42; sophomores, Anna Drew Haugen, 5; Bailey Brown, 10; Keenan Lee McHugh, 12; Margaret McLaughlin, 14; and McCann Perkins, 25.
Claiming victory against Macon-East on Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Morgan junior varsity boys coached by Lebo Jones won 32-19 and the junior varsity girls coached by Thomas won 25-8.
Top scorers for the junior varsity Senators were Sam Garner with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Milton Hand with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Top scorers for the junior varsity Lady Senators were Ally Spivey with 10 points and Taylor Roberts with 8.

All games start at 4 p.m. with junior varsity girls, unless stated otherwise. Area Games include Fort Dale, Clark Prep and Monroe.
