Morgan varsity boys get two wins in basketball, girls fall

Morgan Academy varsity and junior varsity boys basketball took on Fort Dale and Clarke Prep Jan. 4 and 6 with the varsity boys coming away with two wins.

Under the leadership of head basketball coach Matthew Allen, the Senators defeated Fort Dale in Greenville 61-36 and defeated Clark Prep at home 53-35. A game with Monroe was moved to Jan. 14 at Monroeville.

The varsity Senators are 3-0 in area play and 6-9 overall after these games.

Allen also coaches the Morgan Academy junior varsity, who are currently 8-3 on the season and will host the junior varsity state invitational tournament on Jan. 22. The JV Senators are the fourth seed and will play Bessemer, the fifth seed, in the first round.

Allen said of his varsity Senators, “With how slow we started out this year, we have really come out strong this second half of the season. Says a lot about these kids’ determination and drive to keep pushing forward and to do what needs to be done to win.”

Also, on Jan 4 and 6, the Lady Senators varsity dropped two games to go 8-7 overall and 0-3 in area play.

The Lady Senators fell to Fort Dale 57-37 and to Clarke Prep 63-41.

Against Fort Dale, Sarah Thomas scored 13 points and Bailey Brown scored 12. And against Clarke Prep,

Brown scored 21 points and Sarah Thomas scored 13.

Head varsity girls basketball coach Lebo Jones said of his team, “This group has been playing together for a long time. I'm proud of their effort and commitment. Hopefully we can make a run at the playoffs.”

The JV Lady Senators are 5-5.
