Morgan Academy’s Andrew Thomas shutout the Macon East Knights 4-0 in game one of a varsity doubleheader played at home on Thursday, April 22.
Thomas led the Senators on the mound in game one, giving up no runs on one hit over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking zero.
The Knights’ starting pitcher went four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four. Two other Macon East pitches entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one inning each.
C.J. Crocker, John Allen Ingram, T.B. Clements, Chris Gardner and Thomas collected one hit each to lead the Senators. And the Senators did not commit a single error in the field with Davis Vardaman having 11 chances, the most on the team.
Morgan Academy lost the lead late, however, in game two, falling 10-3 to Macon East.
The game was tied at 3-all with Macon East batting in the top of the fifth when an error scored two runs for the visiting Knights.
The Senators struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Macon East, giving up 10 runs.
Morgan Academy captured the lead in the first inning when Gardner doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. But Macon East evened things up at 3-all in the top of the fourth inning.
The Macon East starting pitcher allowed four hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out six.
Osagie Aghedo was on the mound for Morgan Academy. He lasted four innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out two. Hayden Roberts threw three innings in relief.
Gardner went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Senators in hits.
Following April 22’s doubleheader, the Senators are 18-8 overall and 6-2 in area play.
The varsity champions of AISA Class AAA Region 2 Area 1, the Senators host round two of the AISA state baseball playoffs against Lee-Scott Academy from Auburn beginning Thursday, April 29. Games will be played at 4 and 6 p.m. The Senators earned a bye in round one.
Morgan Academy head varsity baseball coach Stephen Clements said he is very proud of his team for their hard work this season. He said he is “excited to watch them compete next versus a very well coached and athletic Lee-Scott team. Lee-Scott has a great program with lots of history, we will have to be at our best to compete with them.”
