The Southside High School Panthers saw their remarkable 2025 football season come to a close Friday night, falling 51–20 to the Bayside High School Admirals in the Class 3A semifinal round.
Though the loss ended Southside’s pursuit of a state championship, it was one of the best performances in program history.
Bayside came out fast and explosive, quickly putting points on the board in the first quarter while holding the Panthers scoreless. Still, the Panthers showed the fight and resilience that defined their historic run.
In the second quarter, Kendrell Wilson broke through Bayside’s defense and powered his way into the end zone for Southside’s first score. Jaibrien Gresham added the two-point conversion, giving the Panthers a boost and breathing life into their sideline.
Moments before halftime, Southside produced another spark when Cedrick Simmons came up with a huge interception, giving the Panthers the ball and a chance to swing momentum in their favor. Though Southside couldn’t capitalize before the break, the play showcased the grit that kept them in the fight.
However, the third quarter opened with a costly miscue. The Panthers suffered a turnover on their first possession of the second half, and Bayside quickly converted it into more points, extending their lead and regaining firm control.
Despite the growing deficit, Southside refused to quit. In the fourth quarter, Cedrick Simmons continued to shine, breaking through for two more touchdowns to close the gap and demonstrate the Panthers’ relentless spirit. His late-game surge energized the team and reminded fans why this group earned its place among the state’s best.
But Bayside’s early advantage and consistent execution ultimately proved too much to overcome, allowing the Admirals to secure the win and punch their ticket to the state championship.
After the game, head coach Charles Moody expressed tremendous pride in his team.
“This group made history,” he said. “They set a new standard for Southside football with accomplishing the best record in school history. The heart they showed tonight, and all season long is something this community will never forget.”
Southside closes the season with one of the best records in school history and an appearance in the Class 3A semifinals for the second year in a row. Led by key seniors and emerging young talent, the 2025 Panthers built a foundation that will fuel the program for years to come.
