An outpatient dialysis center has opened in Selma.

Vaughan Kidney Care, located at 1360 E. Highland Ave., is operated by Innovative Renal Care and Vaughan Regional Medical Center, a community-based hospital affiliated with ScionHealth. The center provides in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis for those experiencing end stage renal disease, also known as kidney failure.

Hemodialysis is a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney, or a dialyzer, are used to clean a patient’s blood if their kidneys no longer function. Diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which are major health issues in the Black Belt, are the leading causes of kidney failure, according to the Kidney Foundation.

Long-time community nephrologist Kent Taylor, MD, from Vaughan Nephrology, serves as the center’s medical director.

“We are thrilled to provide state-of-the-art dialysis services to our local community in a beautiful, patient-centered environment,” Vaughan CEO David McCormack said. “The goal of our care team is to make each patient feel comfortable and supported holistically through their treatment journey. We offer guidance and education ranging from navigation of insurance to managing a healthy diet.”

“Our collaboration aims at offering enhanced patient outcomes, contributing to an increased quality of life for patients with end stage renal disease in Central Alabama,” said Nick Mendez, CEO of Innovative Renal Care. “By offering eight in-center stations and options for peritoneal dialysis or home hemodialysis, patients have some flexibility in choosing the type of treatment that best fits their lifestyle.”

A grand opening celebration is being planned alongside the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce for this spring. For more information about dialysis services or the clinic, please call 334-867-0076.
