Wayne Vardaman, Executive Director of the Selma and Dallas County Economic Development Authority has always focused on three goals:
1- Attract New Industry
2- Expand Existing Industry
3- Develop the workforce
“The last one is where we face a challenge,” Vardaman said. “We need to do a better job preparing our high school students for these ample vocational positions in our area.”
Dallas County suffers from lack of workers for the local industry. The problem is not only in Dallas County and Selma, it is a problem across the state, according to Vardaman.
“The issue is getting our high school students into vocational schools and on to our local industries. We must train our people to satisfy the demand. Selma should be a vibrant retail and industry hub,” Vardaman said.
The solution resides in training graduating seniors for these jobs at the expanding industries in the area.
