New amenities coming in $5M renovation of St. James Hotel

Work on the courtyard at St. James Hotel.

The developer renovating the St. James Hotel has a few surprises to reveal as construction moves forward.

One is the addition of 13 rooms more than originally planned in the historic property on Water Avenue. Developer Jim Lewis of Rhaglan Hospitality said there will be 55 rooms total to accommodate more visitors. The new rooms will be located on the first floor, where meeting rooms and a banquet room once stood. The addition of meeting space will come in a future phase, Lewis said.

The $5 million renovation includes bringing back the staircase with a new design that will be revealed soon. Right now, it is only wood planks as construction continues.

The restaurant’s dining room is being reconfigured with a vision of accommodating two types of patrons, visitors and local clientele, Lewis said.

The restaurant and bar next to the courtyard is being redone with a new kitchen. Lewis said the courtyard will be open for seating seasonally, and the restaurant is there for locals and visitors.

The hotel will be a boutique Hilton property, so Lewis said they are fulfilling requirements to fit in the Hilton brand.
