Award-winning graphic designer and Selma native Darryl Daniels has created an apparel brand for people who share a love for the Queen City.
Daniels, who has done graphic design projects for Universal Music, Absolut Vodka and the city of Los Angeles, introduced his Selma Love line of products earlier this month, according to a news release.
“The project combines original design, love of home and community spirit into a collection created for people who share a love for Selma to be able to wear it wherever they are in the world,” according to a news release.
The brand carries a signature heart and bridge emblem that symbolizes “connection, community and love for the city.”
“For me, creating Selma Love is more than apparel,” Daniels said. “It’s about translating love and connection into something that is a visible, tangible part of not only its renewal, but its evolution going forward.”
Daniels was born in Selma and was raised between Selma and New York. He now lives in Montgomery while maintaining personal and creative ties to Selma.
“The people, the memories, and the sense of community were what made Selma special to me,” Daniels said. “I wanted to create something authentic, as someone from Selma, that people from Selma and people who simply love Selma could wear as a little reminder.”
The brand’s June 5 launch date would have been the 88th birthday of Daniels’ father, who passed away in April. Daniels and his father often bonded over their love of Selma and their hopes for the city’s “continued renewal.”
“Selma Love is rooted not only in history and memory, but in hope and the belief that the people who truly love a place help shape not just what it was, but what it can become,” Daniels said.
Daniels said he plans to donate a portion of Selma Love’s quarterly proceeds to various Selma-based organizations doing important work within the community.
