The Pleasant Grove City Council approved a $35,000 appropriation to Pleasant Grove High School Principal Jarvis Watkins at their March 7 meeting.
Councilwoman Yolanda Lawson said the money was approved by the council to provide the high school with “a list of things that they need right now, and it’s ongoing.”
Mayor Jerry Brasseale presented the check to Watkins.
In other business, Kenneth Hatfieldrequested $5,000 in emergency funds to repair the roof of the fire department building. He reported that the building has had issues with water seeping in, creating problems for the staff. Hatfield’s request was approved unanimously.
Councilman Kevin Dunn reported the police department has hired a female officer, Kelly Flores.
“I don’t think people realize how important it is to have a female officer added to the staff,” he said. “It really cuts down a lot of issues, because citizen contacts include males and females, and we need that as officers. That’s a great asset to add to our team.”
Councilman Phillip Houston reported that the summerreading program at the library will begin on June 8 at 2 p.m.
“I would encourage all of the citizens to get their kids involved with that,” he said. “It’s a good thing to do during the summer.”
Houston added that the library has an ongoing book sale.
Lawson asked if it would be possible to set up city email addresses for councilmembers. She said that she tried to get information about a grant application from a source but was told that she could not without an official city email.
She was told that organizations typically want email applications from government email addresses because government email servers are encrypted to help prevent hacking.
Lawson saidbusinesses will be highlighted for the beautification boardstarting in April. She asked for the public’s patience as that arrives but encouraged anyone to refer her to a business that could be recognized by the board.

Brasseale announced April 4-8 as spring cleanup days for the city.
During public comments, Jerry Williams asked about the status of the speed limit on 5th Avenue, saying that there have been several car accidents near his home.
Lawson responded that she has not been able to get information on how to authorize changing the speed limit, and so the limit currently remains the same. Williams stressed that something needs to be done to change it.
