Multiple schools in the Black Belt are among a list of 500 to be designated Semiquincentennial schools by the USA Alabama Semiquincentennial Commission and American Village.

Semiquincentennial refers to the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Schools that sign up to be Semiquincentennial are required to implement American history in all "core subjects and the arts," encourage mental and physical health among students and engage in community service projects.

“As we approach America’s 250th birthday, we are reminded that our freedoms were secured through sacrifice and sustained through responsibility," said American Village CEO Col. Alan Miller, USMC (Ret.).

"The principles our nation was founded upon do not preserve themselves; they must be taught, understood, and lived. We are proud of the response we’ve received from schools across Alabama as they commit to carrying these ideals forward.”

Other schools are currently being added to the list. The deadline to submit a request for designation is Jan. 30. Click here for more information.
