Students from across the Black Belt competed in the Academic Challenge for Excellence competition at Wallace Community College Selma and came away with awards.

The ACE competition includes scholarships for seniors in the technical sections.

Morgan Academy won the most awards with 11 in IT, English composition, Algebra II, geometry, advanced math natural sciences and social studies.

IT winners were 1. Kate Patterson 2. Anne Hayes Utsey 3. Madge Minter; Anna Ingram - English comp; 1. John Braxton Hale 2. Caden Tellier 3. Brooke Waters in Algebra II; Patrick Johnson, geometry; 1. Ellis Ann McHugh 2. Patrick Johnson 3. Parker Hewston for geometry team; Caden Autrey for advanced math; 1. Caden Autrey 2. Tucker Brooks 3. Delaney McHugh for advanced math team; 1. Wood Jones 2. Sarah Moore 3. Ames Roberts for natural sciences division I; 1. Jack Bearden 2. Walt Bowline 3. Travis Jones for social studies division I; 1. Gavin Hewston 2. Walter Gilmore 3. Mary Peyton Meeks for social studies division II.

Wilcox Central won four awards in keyboarding, algebra 1, health occupations knowledge. Keyboarding winners were Tyneshia Fails and Py’Teria Rogers; Algebra I, 1. Ken’Javion Acoff 2. Quentin Wilson; health occupation knowledge, 1. DeAsia Collier 2. Shalandria Manzie 3. Tyonnia Mobley.

Wilcox Academy won five awards in bookkeeping and accounting, English grammar Algebra I team, Algebra II, natural sciences division I. Bookkeeping and accounting - Anna G. Till, English grammar - Hayden Morton; Tait Crabtree, Algebra I; Thatcher Decker, Algebra II; 1. Lizzie Alford 2. Samantha Cook, natural sciences division II.

 

Selma High won two awards. Zoey Edwards for cosmetology/hair; and Sydney Pritchett for public speaking.

Dallas County High won three awards. Jh’Nijah Minor for drafting: mechanical drawing, Makayla Muse, business plan individual and Makayla Muse 2. Adriana Reeves business plan team.

Southside won three awards. Malcolm Glover, commercial industrial wiring; Jodarius Hamilton, brick laying; RaQuez Broadnax, block laying.

Ellwood Christian's Fredrick Wilson won for TIG-MIG welding.

RC Hatch High's Michael Carlisle won for arc welding.

Keith High's Jada Morgan won for health occupations skills.

About 300 students from 17 high schools across the Black Belt participated.
