Here’s a rundown of local election results in Black Belt counties covered by the Black Belt News Network, according to the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.
The May 19 vote was the Democrat and Republican primaries, but because many of the seats had no Republican opponents, the general election is a formality.
If a candidate does not earn 50% plus one votes, there will be a runoffs on June 16.
Dallas County had 8,736 votes, which is a 30.8% turnout.
Dallas County Sheriff winner is DeWayne Sanders, who beat Willie Calhoun Jr. with 54.6% of the vote.
In Perry County, 3,216 votes were cast, which is a turnout of 43% of registered voters.
Perry County Commission winners are:
District 1 - Donald Bennett unseated longtime incumbent Albert Turner Jr. in a tight margin of 50.51% of the vote to 49.49% for Turner.
In a social media post, Bennett said: “Perry County, we’ve got work to do. We can make it happen. We need this. We’re going to come together and work together. This is a County Commission that is going to work on results and provide those results. The city involved – all the support; We have a regional agenda to make sure we’re working hard for people of Perry County.”
District 2 – Tony Long won with 62% against Ernest L. Donaldson, who got 37%.
District 3 – For the Republican seat, Brett Harrison won with 56%, beating Katie Crocker Burkes at 43%.
Perry County Sheriff winner is Roy Fikes, who got 82% and beat Robert “Tony” Sykes who got 17%.
Perry County Board of Education:
District 5 – Vera Davis won with 66% against Tiffanie Lewis at 33%.
In Marengo County, 5,425 votes were cast, which is a 36.2% turnout of registered voters.
Marengo County Commission winners are:
District 3 – Terry Hinton Sr. won with 51.8% of the votes against John Crawford Jr.
District 5 – Patrick Champion won with 56%, beating Will Norris who got 43%.
Marengo County Coroner - Ernest Taylor Jr. won against Dexter Turner with 67% of the vote.
Marengo County Revenue Commissioner - Falisa Moore won with 62% against Sharon Hilbish.
Lowndes County had 3332 votes cast, which is a 35% turnout.
Lowndes County Commission winners are:
District 1 - Clifford “Cee” Jackson won with 55% of the vote, beating Robert Harris and Brandon Jermicheal Thomas, who got 29% and 15% respectively.
Lowndes County Coroner winner is Terrell Means with 82% over Teryle Myles with 17%.
Board of Education:
District 1 ended with a 50% tie between Arthur Nelson and Franklin Nettles, both getting 321 votes. They will face off again in the June runoff.
District 5 - Chequita Surles won the seat with 62% over John Hulett.
Montgomery County had 48,077 voters, which is a 30% turnout.
Board of Education:
District 1 – Dwayne Farrior got a narrow win with 52% of the vote, beating out Marquetta Johnson
District 2 – Pamela Portis won at 56% against Brenda Irby and Damion Womack.
District 5 – Alvin Tucker won the Democratic ticket with 48%, beating Edward D. Willis Jr. at 27% and Kathleen J. Kalahar at 24%. The Republican winner is Melissa Snowden with 73%, beating Pamela Cloud.
District 6 – Jerome Jones Jr. won with 70%, beating Kneosha McGlon and Don Rickard.
