Kimesha "Sunshine" Alvadaro

Kimesha “Sunshine” Alvarado has qualified to run for Selma City School board for the District 3 seat.

Alvarado is a disabled veteran with 12 years of military service, a mother of three, property owner, and active member of several service organizations.

Alvarado is a 1991 graduate of Selma High School. Her mother graduated in 1971 as part of Selma High’s first fully integrated class and her eldest son graduated in the Class of 2015, and she currently has two sons enrolled in the Selma City School District.

Alvarado served six years in the U.S. Navy and six years in the Air National Guard, and holds a master's degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Leadership and Organizational Development.

She said she is running to bring transparency, accountability and compassion to the school board. She is focused on advocating for the total student, whether college-bound, preparing for a skilled trade, or navigating special education services.

“I want to be a bridge between parents, students, and the board,” said Alvarado. “As a team player, I will work to ensure every child in Selma has access to all programs and services they need to thrive.”

“As an active parent in the school system, I have faced many challenges in dealing with the administration—and I was disheartened," she said. "Imagine how many parents feel when they attempt to discuss their children’s future and are met with rejection or left unheard. I want to change that.”

Alvarado’s priorities include making strong policy that supports the mission of the State Board of Education, supporting teachers and staff, creating safe learning environments, and restoring public trust through consistent community engagement.

She will be on the ballot in the Aug. 26 election.
