On Thursday July 17th the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) will be hosting a Cottage Food Safety Training in Selma. The training will take place at the Trustmark Bank community room located downtown at 310 Broad Street. The workshop will be held from 9am - noon and will help participants gain a better understanding of the current cottage food law and the requirements to stay in compliance.

The current law was revised in 2021 and considers cottage foods as items prepared in a person’s home, made available for sale,  and are non-potentially hazardous foods not requiring time and temperature control for safety.  Items commonly prepared in homes and sold that would fall under the cottage food law include, but are not limited to, pickled vegetables, salsas, jams or jellies. The July 17th training was developed for those who would like to learn more about selling nonhazardous food items produced in their homes.  The training will be led by ACES Regional Agent, Alice Moore. Topics that will be covered are designed to help attendees better understand where cottage food items can be sold, recognize product labeling requirements, and reinforce basic food safety practices.

Pre-registration for the training is required. There is also a $25 registration fee required to participate. Those who would like to attend can register online at https://www.aces.edu/event/al-cottage-food-training-selma/ or call 334-216-0738. For more information on this training and other educational resources available through Alabama Cooperative Extension, please contact the Dallas County office at 334-875-3200 or visit www. ACES.edu. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Alabama A&M & Auburn Universities) is an equal opportunity educator and employer. Everyone is welcome!
