Dr. Glenn McPhillips, DPM, a retired podiatric surgery specialist in Selma, is the Selma Art Guild (SAG) featured artist for October and November.
A show of his work and fun Halloween themed reception for him will be held Sunday Oct. 12 from 2-4 p.m. at the SAG Gallery located at 508 Selma Ave.
The reception will feature Halloween candy and trick or treat bags that attendees can use to trick or treat around the gallery while viewing Dr. McPhillips’ works, said SAG President Cam Walker Guarino.
McPhillips was born in Elkins Park, Pa. He grew up in Hatboro, Pa. where he attended Hatboro-Horsham Senior High School. He attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science for his bachelor’s degree, then New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City and back to Philadelphia, Pa. for his residency.
He and his wife, Dr. Tomeko McPhillips, also a podiatrist, now make their home in Collirene, Ala. She still practices at Rural Health Medical.
McPhillips and his wife, Tomeko, will be married for 26 years in November and have three children, Cole, 24, Ashley, 21, and Christian, 19. They moved to Selma in March 2002.
“I have always loved art and have collected numerous paintings and other pieces,” McPhillips said. “I had always wanted to be able to paint or be creative with arts and crafts… but didn’t think I was artistic.”
However, “After having a back fusion and a lot of time on my hands during recovery, I purchased some different kinds of paint (acrylic and oils), ink, and canvases. Then I just experimented with the different mediums (oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media) and styles of painting,” he said.
But McPhillips is no ordinary artist. He said, “My Art Philosophy is that there are no rules when it comes to creating art. Since I had no formal training, I was able to ‘break’ all the rules. I found along the way that I really liked what I created most of the time. It was an experiment most of the time to see what processes worked for me and what didn’t.”
He continued, “I mostly like bright colors and florals. But I also like creating abstract paintings. Each piece radiates warmth and energy, encouraging people to see ‘happiness’ and hopefully a personal connection.”
McPhillips said, “Having my own art show at the Guild (SAG) is like being in one of my ‘dreamy’ paintings… because I couldn’t have ever imagined that I would be here… it’s a dream.”
Guarino said the McPhillips’ show will remain up for view through the end of November and can be viewed Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. “I hope Selma art lovers will come out to have some Halloween fun and view Dr. McPhillips’ works, which would make great gifts for Christmas.”
The Selma Art Guild was founded in the 1970s to provide opportunities for Selma area artists and to promote their work.
