April McCartney

April McCartney

April McCartney, Selma Art Guild Artist of the Month for February and March, said she was “excited” to have a show of her weaved baskets at the SAG Gallery on Sunday, Feb. 22.

McCartney said of the event, “I was shocked there was that much interest,” and that “I could carry on something my mother (Betty Bain) taught me.”

McCartney, a second-generation basket weaver, began her journey into basketry four decades ago under the guidance of her mother. She said she balances her craft with a love of the outdoors, kayaking and company of her dogs.

Cam Walker Guarino, president of the Selma Art Guild, said, “I was pleased with the turnout for April, and said McCartney’s work will remain for view and sale until the end of March and during the Historic Selma Tour of Homes. Guarino said she was especially partial to the Easter bunny baskets by McCartney, but was amazed at all the baskets shown, which are for sale.

McCartney will next be teaching a class in making her Easter rabbit baskets at Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center in Camden on March 14. She said those interested should call Black Belt Treasurers (334)-682-9878 for information and to register.

The Selma Art Guild is a nonprofit organization which was founded in the 1970s to encourage and promote local artists as well as to provide a place for them to show their art. The gallery at 508 Selma Ave. is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
