A family from Athens, AL is warning others of a scam that uses AI-generated voices to steal money.
According to a story by WSFA, in this case the scam used the voices of their relatives to make calls that sound like an emergency is happening.
The incident occurred when a mother received what looked like a call from her daughter, with the voice saying that her husband had just died. The mother hung up and called her daughter in which she discovered that the previous call was fake.
The story reports that AI scams like this are taking place throughout the nation. Calls will mimic the voice of a relative and act as if an emergency situation is happening that requires money to be sent.
