The Alabama Tourism Department will kick off its Year of Alabama Trails campaign tomorrow morning at a press conference at Vulcan Park in Birmingham. 

"This initiative will spotlight Alabama’s incredible hiking, biking and paddling trails while highlighting the positive impact of outdoor recreation on tourism and economic development across the state," said a press release from the department. 

"To celebrate Alabama Tourism’s Year of Alabama Trails campaign, lace up your boots and get trail-ready with Birmingham’s iconic Vulcan statue while checking out some larger-than-life hiking gear at Vulcan Park."

The event will feature: 

  • Remarks from state tourism officials, outdoor recreation leaders and nonprofit trail advocates, including:

- Lee Sentell, Alabama Tourism Director

- Commissioner Chris Blankenship, Alabama Dept. Of Conservation and Natural Resources

- Paul DeMarco, Alabama Trails Foundation Board President

- Rusha Smith, Executive Director of Freshwater Land Trust

- T.C. McLemore, Innovate Alabama, Executive Director of Outdoor Recreation Programs

- Cathy Sloss-Jones, Rails to Trails Conservancy Board Member

- Cynthia Cardona, President and CEO of Vulcan Park & Museum

  • The unveiling of the Top 25 Must-Tread Trails for 2025
  • The debut of larger-than-life hiking gear, officially kicking off the campaign
  • A preview of outdoor events and programming this spring in conjunction with “Year of Alabama Trails”
  • A ribbon cutting on Vulcan Trail and reception to follow
