A report from the Alabama Department of Labor (ADOL) showed that unemployment in January was "steady" at 2.7%.Â
It is below 3.1% recorded in January 2025 and represents 64,061 unemployed people, compared to 64,776 in December and 72,543 in January 2025.
The number of employed people increased by 17,703 over the year to 2,323,588, said to be "a new record high." The civilian labor force increased to 2,387,649.Â
Wage and salary employment increased over the year by 10,600 to 2,184,200, with gains seen in leisure and hospitality sector at more than 6,400, professional and business services sector at more than 5,500, and the construction sector at more than 3,300.
The average weekly wages reportedly increased by $85.22 over the year to $1,150.59 and increases were seen in wages in the manufacturing sector, trade, transportation, and utilities sector and the professional and business services sector.
Counties with the highest unemployment rates are Perry County at 6.6%, Greene County at 6.4%, and Monroe County at 6.2%.
Selma remains among the highest at 4.4% though this is down from 4.8%.
